BIKE TRAILS SERIES: NEW SOUTH WALES AND ACT

If you are keen to check out some bike trails in NSW you’ve got a lot of options to choose from. This state is home to many cycling areas including mountain trails, national parks, vineyards, rainforests and beachside paths. We have picked out just a few great mountain bike and cycling trails that you might like to consider if you are travelling through NSW.

Stromlo Forest Park

Where: Uriarra Rd, Stromlo ACT
Difficulty level: Easy, Intermediate, Difficult, Very Difficult
Stromlo Forest Park offers a variety of world class bike trails. These range from beginner level trails all the way up to the tracks used for the 2009 UCI World Mountain Bike Championships. The tracks also offer a range of terrain including packed clay, rocks and sand. With 50 km of track to explore, you can choose short or longer tracks. Thredbo Village

Where: Mount Kosciuszko, Thredbo
Difficulty Level: Easy, Intermediate, Difficult, Very Difficult
Thredbo village is becoming a key mountain biking destination in Australia. In the warmer months of November-May the long ski run is transformed into an awesome downhill mountain bike experience called the Thredbo Downhill. The great part is that you don’t have to climb the hill to make the epic decent—you can take your bike on the chairlift to the top. Sydney Olympic Park

Where: Sydney Olympic Park
Difficulty Level: Easy, Intermediate, Difficult
Sydney Olympic Park has over 430 hectares of bike tracks including racing cycle lanes, meandering family friendly tracks, and BMX and Mountain X Monster bike tracks. The racing cycling tracks offer quality on-road lanes that are well marked and signposted to Australian Standards.They offer a great space for training with low traffic outside event times. If you are keen for rough, dirty, downhill riding, the Monster BMX and Mountain X track located between the Archery Centre and P5 Car Park on Hill Road is the place to be. The 306m long Monster BMX Track is suitable for beginners through to pros and is a great place to practice. It has dirt jumps and bends that are great fun and a perfect place to learn and practice.

 

Awaba MTB Park

Where: Mt Faulk Rd, Newcastle

Difficulty Level: Easy, Intermediate, Difficult, Very Difficult/div>

Awaba Mountain Bike Park is a must if you are looking for a fantastic cross-country loop or a thrilling downhill track. The 12 km cross country loop has hosted countless races and is well marked. This track takes you through gullies and across creeks, zig-zagging up and down the mountain. You can also choose to branch off onto other tracks that are marked according to difficulty. As for the downhill track, it’s just wild. This track is for those brave souls who love a fast and intense decent. Awaba MTB Park is maintained by the Hunter Mountain Bike Association who regularly organise cross-country and downhill races on the tracks.
