5 BEST CANOE DAY TRIPS IN AUSTRALIA
Australia is beautiful with lots of scenery to check out, no matter where you live. A great way to check it out is by going on a canoe or kayak day trip.
We’ve made a list of places around Australia that we think you should check out on your next day trip.
1. THE MURRAY RIVER

It’s impossible not to mention Australia’s longest river, the Murray River. It is 2,508 kilometres long, and forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria and flows into South Australia. There’s several major towns you can check out along the river, including Albury/Wodonga, Mulwala/Yarrawonga, Moama/Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura and Renmark.
There’s so much to explore on the river! It’s not known for its rapids, but rather for the serenity. From the river you’ll be able to check out the incredible wildlife. You can even take guided tours if you’re not up for planning your own trip.

2. KATHERINE GORGE, NORTHERN TERRITORY

This should be on your to-do list for your next Australian Outback trip. The Katherine Gorge is a series of 13 gorges, and is best seen from a canoe.
This destination has become very popular with tourists lately, but luckily there’s so much to explore you’ll be able to find your own space. You’ll be able to see towering cliffs and rocks, such as Smitt Rocks, where you can also camp. Make sure you pack your camera to get photos of the gorgeous scenery.
Nitmiluk Tours host three different tours of the Katherine Gorge. There’s even an overnight hire option, which will allow you to explore more gorges. If you’re wanting a shorter trip, there’s also half day and full day options.

3. SYDNEY HARBOUR, NEW SOUTH WALES

For those who aren’t looking to travel to the outback or country for their canoeing trip, then a day on the Sydney Harbour is perfect.
The water here is protected, which makes the water gentle and great for those of any canoeing level. Canoeing here will allow you to see the best of Sydney from the water.
There’s a ton of companies who have rental kayaks and canoes in the area, including Sydney Harbour Kayaks, who also offer lessons. They will also take you on a four hour kayak “eco tour”. This takes you through Middle Harbour where you will learn about the natural and social history of the area. Other options include:
4. ROTTNEST ISLAND, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

10 kilometres off Fremantle, you’ll find Rottnest Island. You can enjoy the Indian Ocean as you explore the 30-kilometre distance around the island.
The island also features Just 4 Fun Aqua Park, which is perfect for the kids!
At Rottnest Island, you’ll be able to soak up the clear blue water, sandy beaches and marine wildlife. The island is home to quokkas, so when you’re having a break from canoeing, take some time out on the island to spot the marsupial.

5. FREYCINET PENINSULA, TASMANIA

Canoeing around the Freycinet Peninsula will give you the spectacular views of Freycinet National Park. You’ll see everything from granite mountains, sandy beaches and turquoise water. There’s a tonne of bays and beaches for you to check out, including Coles Bay and Hazards Beach.
If you want to extend your day trip, Schouten Island is only 1.6 kilometres away. This will feed your canoeing craving, and also allow you to see the penguins which call the island home.
